Say Hello To

Our Summer Interns!

CGC is blessed to be in our 4th year working with summer interns. This year all of our interns are from Tennessee, a first. Haley hales from Erin. Hayden from Lawrenceburg. Andrew from Bulls Gap.

It's also a first that all interns are either rising Freshmen or a current student at Trevecca. Help me welcome the 2022 class of CGC Interns. You can send them encouraging cards through out the summer to 700 Sam Hollow Rd, Dickson TN 37055. Paragraph

Groups We Served in

MAY

When the Music City Chorus was on campus recently, they shared a taste of their tunes at supper.

  • Praxis - Standardized Testing Site
  • Ministerial Candidates
  • Music City Chorus
  • Family Camp

"I love seeing God at work in people’s lives - having a front row seat. That is my favorite thing about working at Camp Garner Creek. God, people, nature…what could be better?."

  • Lori Knowles, Director of Group Logistics
  • Came to CGC in August, 2018.
  • Career mom whose 4 children are grown. She has worked in two churches with responsibilities of helping new comers enter church life. Her job at CGC is her re-entry to full time work beyond homemaking.
  • If it has to do with who, what, when, where, how, or to what extent with groups, Lori is the choreographer. When your group contacts CGC about open dates, Lori will be your contact throughout the process and when your event happens, she will continue to be your contact if anything is needed.
  • Lori has been married to CGC's executive director, Finley, for 39 years.
  • Lori loves her role working with groups and group leaders. She sets the standard of CGC's "Yes-driven" culture. What's that? If groups ask for something and it can be done without going to costly or risky extremes, the answer is going to be "yes."

.

Restoration Church, Trevecca Community Church, & Jason Chapel Church came together for Earth Day at the Creek.

A big "Thank You" goes out to these churches that adopted a section at the front entrance of CGC to be their area to take care of. We love it when churches partner with us. We get to know them personally, and they get to know us personally.

The theme of the area is indigenous plants from Tennessee. Volunteers tilled, spread mulch, secured plant donations, planted, and watered.

Part of the mission of CGC is to make the campgrounds a "beautiful place of refuge," and we appreciate this group's transformation and care.

.

in 1974 youth camps began at our campus in Dickson, TN, 6 dorms were built by area churches.

  • Based on septic permit dates, Cottonwood was the first dorm to break ground on March 14, 1974.  Cottonwood is closest to the Tabernacle, and records do not mention which church sponsored its construction. If anyone remembers the details of Cottonwood, we would love to supplement our records.
  • Sycamore was the next dorm approved to build on March 18, 1974. Sycamore was sponsored by McClurkan Church of the Nazarene.
  • Buckeye and Maplewood were the next two cleared for permit on March 22, 1974. Jason Chapel Church of the Nazarene sponsored Buckeye, and Madison Church of the Nazarene sponsored Maplewood.
  • Dogwood and Cedarwood came next being cleared for construction on April 30, 1974. Memphis Calvary Church of the Nazarene was responsible for Dogwood, and Nashville 1st Church of the Nazarene sponsored Cedarwood.
  • Sixteen years passed before the 7th and final dorm was built. Redbud broke ground on May 22, 1990. Two churches pooled resources to pay for Redbud, Memphis Calvary and Nashville 1st.

$1,778 pledged per month through TBAM. That's equivalent to

177 club members.*

  • TBAM launched officially at District Assembly in April.
  • Will TBAM take care of everything CGC needs for new construction on higher ground?

No. It isn't intended to, but it is a significant piece of the plan. It's a piece that allows everyone to play a part in moving to higher ground.

  • By the end of 2022, the goal is 200 Club Member Equivalents (CME).* Then before our first payment will come due in roughly mid-2024 the goal is 400 CME's. The snowball has started down the hill. We just need to keep the momentum going.
  • When is the first payment due on any loans once we receive? We only know the formula in the case of the SBA loan. We make our first payment 18 months after we receive loan proceeds. We are not on the clock yet and don't have a solid answer from the Small Business Administration about when we can expect to see available funding. "I'm excited about building, but I'm also excited to step through the doors God opens. Right now, we wait." Finley Knowles
  • We do not wait idly. The Construction Team is working behind the scenes taking the steps necessary to enable construction once the money arrives.
  • We are making our way around asking everyone to consider becoming a part of a long term solution to a long-term problem. It appears flooding is not going to get better.
  • If you want to sponsor a Camp Garner Creek Day for your church or group contact finleyknowles@campgarnercreek.org

For information about the TEN BUCKS A MONTH Club click here.

----------------------------------

*The Club Member Equivalent (CME) comes from the total monthly commitment divided by $10. What's happening is some are giving in excess of $10/month, so tracking equivalents rather than individuals makes sense.

Major Gifts:

The 2nd Piece Of The Pie

TBAM is 1 of 3 pieces of the pie but alone can't do all the lifting that's required.

Currently we have one large gift of $1 million paid over 4 years from the Jones Legacy Group. This set the bar high when we learned about the gift late last year. The first installment of $250K is deposited in an investment account and is earmarked specifically for the dining hall.

Keep in mind major gifts don't have to be a million dollars. I may pray for it because I know our God, but I know a major gift to some may be well shy of the million mark. Any gift that requires large sacrifice is "major."

CGC Operating Budget:

The 3rd Piece Of The Pie

The final piece of the payment pie is what CGC can pay from its annual operating budget. We have been making payments on the Tabernacle, and with it paid off recently, those funds are redirected to the Dining Hall fund.

God provides for His purposes in a variety of ways.

It's really impossible to pin God down and say,

"This is how it's done."

The Impact of a

Camp Counselor

by Gregg Hunter, President/CEO of the Christian Camping and Conference Association (CCCA)

Camp counselors play a distinct role in the summer camp setting. They are the leaders. Mentors. Mediators. Parents-away-from-home. And they can be some of the most influential people in a young person’s life.

Whether it’s teaching kids how to make friendship bracelets, playing in the pool with hundreds of wild campers, or having deep conversations, camp counselors get to share their hearts of gold with impressionable children who never forget them.

Counselors serve.
They teach.
They listen.
They put in long days of hard work.
They problem solve on the spot.
They give their summer breaks to help rowdy campers get to know Jesus.

The impact these leaders have on youth is tremendous. Campers observe how their counselors interact with other campers and staff members when things are going smoothly, and when times are tough. In a way, counselors pave the way for the next generation—showing them how to serve well, work hard and play hard. Many camp staff leave their summer gig inspiring campers to be counselors one day.
